Impact Metrics Guide¶
Impact metrics are the quantifiable and qualitative measures that track the real-world outcomes of action items. They demonstrate the value of your assessment program and guide future improvement efforts.
What Are Impact Metrics?¶
Impact metrics measure how an action item affects your organization:
- Quantifiable — Dollar savings, time saved, units produced, quality improvements, etc.
- Qualitative — Capability improvements, customer satisfaction, employee engagement, risk reduction, etc.
- Timeline — How long it took to implement and see results
- Evidence — Supporting documentation or data proving the impact
Types of Impact Metrics¶
Operational Metrics¶
Measure internal business improvements: - Cost Reduction — Savings from efficiency improvements - Time Savings — Hours/days saved through process optimization - Quality Improvement — Defect rate reduction, output quality gains - Productivity — Units/output increase, revenue impact - Capacity — Additional throughput or capability enabled
Strategic Metrics¶
Track contribution to business goals: - Risk Mitigation — Reduction in identified risks - Compliance — Achieved compliance standards or certifications - Market Position — Competitive advantage gained - Customer Impact — Customer satisfaction or retention improvements - Growth — New market access or business opportunities enabled
Capability Metrics¶
Measure organizational development: - Skill Development — Employee training completed - Process Improvement — Documented new or improved processes - System Adoption — New tools or systems successfully implemented - Cultural Change — Measurable improvements in team capability
Recording Impact Metrics¶
Step 1: Navigate to the Action Item¶
- Open the Impact Tracker
- Find the action item you've worked on
- Click to open the action item details
Step 2: Add Impact Metrics¶
In the Impact Metrics section:
- Click Add Metric
- Choose the metric type or create a custom one
- Enter the metric value:
- For quantifiable metrics: enter the number and unit (e.g., "$50,000" or "120 hours")
- For qualitative metrics: enter a description (e.g., "Implemented new preventive maintenance schedule")
- Add supporting evidence:
- Attach documentation (spreadsheets, photos, reports)
- Include dates when metrics were achieved
- Add notes explaining the measurement
Step 3: Update Status¶
Mark the action as: - In Progress — Work has started, metrics tracking ongoing - Complete — Work finished, final metrics recorded - Won't Do — Action was decided against
Impact Aggregation¶
Individual Action Impact¶
Each action item displays its collective impact: - Total quantifiable impact (often shown as cost savings or time saved) - Key qualitative outcomes - Completion timeline - Evidence level (documented, estimated, anecdotal)
Assessment-Level Impact¶
When viewing an assessment: - See all impact metrics from actions created by that assessment - Track total value delivered by that assessment - ROI calculation (value created vs. cost to conduct assessment)
Ecosystem-Level Impact¶
The Directors Dashboard aggregates impact across your entire ecosystem: - Total cost savings from all actions - Average time to completion - Most impactful assessment types - Trend analysis showing impact growth over time
Impact Visualization¶
Impact data is visualized on the Directors Dashboard:
- Impact Metrics Card — Total ecosystem impact
- Time Trends — How impact has grown over quarters/years
- Impact by Assessment — Which assessment types drive most value
- Impact by Industry — Industry-specific impact data
- ROI Analysis — Value created vs. assessment program costs
Best Practices for Metrics¶
Be Specific¶
- ❌ "Improved efficiency"
- ✓ "Reduced production cycle time from 8 days to 5 days (37.5% improvement)"
Use Real Data¶
- Whenever possible, base metrics on actual measurements
- When estimates are necessary, clearly label them as estimates
- Attach supporting documentation (data exports, photos, reports)
Include Timeline¶
- When was the impact realized?
- How long did implementation take?
- What's the ongoing benefit period?
Think Holistically¶
- Consider multiple types of impact (operational, strategic, capability)
- Look for secondary benefits (e.g., safety improvements from process changes)
- Account for organizational ripple effects
Document Everything¶
- Keep supporting documentation with the action item
- Create an audit trail showing measurement and verification
- Include names and dates of people verifying metrics
Common Impact Metrics by Industry¶
Manufacturing¶
- Production rate improvement (units/hour)
- Quality improvement (scrap/defect rate reduction)
- Energy consumption reduction (kWh/units produced)
- Safety improvement (incident rate reduction)
- Cost savings from supply chain optimization
Service¶
- Labor productivity (revenue per employee hour)
- Customer satisfaction scores
- Service delivery time reduction
- Error rate reduction
- Cost per transaction
Logistics & Distribution¶
- Order fulfillment time
- Shipping cost reduction
- Warehouse throughput improvement
- Inventory reduction
- On-time delivery improvement
Exporting Impact Data¶
Export all impact metrics for external reporting:
- Open the Directors Dashboard
- Click Download in the toolbar
- Choose CSV or YAML format
- Metrics are included in the export with all supporting data
